Cockatoos Parrots are often described as intelligent and emotional birds. They are very popular pet birds with personalities as flashy and energetic as their crest. While these birds may be best known for the fan of feathers that they display on tops of their heads, there are plenty of other fun and fascinating cockatoo facts for bird lovers to focus on.

These birds are high maintenance both physically and emotionally, as they need a lot of attention and a great deal of time outside their cages. Without adequate attention, cockatoos sometimes become excessively boisterous and are potentially destructive, chewing on furniture, walls, and other household items.

Weight: Average 9 to 31 ounces depending on the species.

Size: Average 13 to 26 inches (30 to 90 cm) in length.

Cockatoo Lifespan: 26 to 50 years (upwards of 60-80 years is possible).

Care & Feeding

A pet cockatoo will need a steady supply of appropriate items to chew and destroy. Cockatoos need a balanced diet of equal shares of seeds and vegetables with a small number of fruits, nuts, proteins, cooked rice, bean mixture and table food, such as cheese, corn, cereal, pasta, meat etc.

Cockatoos Personality & Behavior

Cockatoos are very lively and affectionate birds. Deprived of affection, cockatoos will become depressed or exhibit neurotic behaviors. They are intelligent, playful, mischevious, and they can be exceptionally loud.

Housing for your Cockatoo should:

have food and water containers placed at opposite ends of the enclosure. avoid having perches located directly over food containers. contain toys and accessories that are moved around occasionally to prevent boredom and aggression. offer occasional opportunity.
